About Tarsila do Amaral
Tarsila do Amaral was born in September 1886 in the interior of the state of São Paulo. After studying in São Paulo, Barcelona, and Paris, she joined the Brazilian Modernist Movement in 1922 and, from 1924 onwards, began to paint inspired by her childhood on the farm, using vibrant colors, distinctly Brazilian themes, and the cubist techniques she had learned abroad. “I want to be the painter of my country”, Tarsila once wrote, expressing her desire to portray the beauty of Brazil.
